The Mill Cottage
Arudy watermill traced back to the fifteenth century, standing astride the scenic canal and ancient laundries that were used by the tanneries in the nineteenth century. It is an authentic flour mill, which has been belonging to our family for more than one century and was used till the late 1950s. In the centre of the village of Arudy, the building overlooks a typical landscape: the canal, the town and its lovely church, and the Azerque mountain.
Charming and stylish recently refurbished house of character, suitable for up to 6 people.
The cottage is a perfect spot to unwind in a beautiful Pyrenean environment.
It is ideally located, at the entrance of the Ossau Valley, to feed your needs of exploration and adventure, enjoying a full range of outdoors activities, according to your own desires and seasons.
Outdoors activities embrace skiing in the winter (3 stations are within a 30 to 45min driving distance), cycling, hiking, watersports such as kayaking, canyoning (especially in the spring) and water rafting, trout fishing in the rivers and streams, horse rides, etc. If you turn out to be a good cyclist, you'll be thrilled by lots of legendary Tour de France mountain passes (Aubisque, Soulor, Marie-Blanque). The Petit train d'Artouste, the highest train in Europe, is another must-do and a perfect mean to discover a wonderful landscape without putting too much physical effort!
From winter to summer, you can enjoy a rich heritage, on an architecture and culture level, its deep-rooted pastoralism (the famous local Ossau sheep cheese, the summer transhumance).
Further north (approx. 25 to 30min driving) is the Jurançon wine region and the city of Pau, which offers a lot of attractions too.
Further south, at the end of the valley, is the border with Spain where you can head to for some shopping, in the "ventas", the small and typical food stores.
So many things to do in our valley and the surroundings regions...if you feel lost, you'll find information in our leaflets and specialized magazines, and the Tourist Office is only 2min walking from the cottage.
In town, you will find a pallet of local businesses and convenient stores: groceries, bakeries, butcheries, drugstores, banks and cash-machines, tobacco shops, flower shop, restaurants and bars. There is a supermarket at the west end of the town (5min by car). The outdoor market takes place every Tuesday and Saturday in the morning, and is a good way to get fresh and delicious local products.
